Projects with Umbul Umbul Flags

Uhuru world music festival, Weissenstein, since 1994: Rainbow Flags have been visualising the Uhuru World Music Festival. Uhuru is the Swahili word for freedom. Skilled musicians from different cultures offer in a wide workshop space the possibility to come in close contact with an instrument.

Children in Brazil, Klosterberg festival 1993: The Children in Brazil foundation supports children's education. In 1974 one child was sponsored, today there are more than 700. The street festival taking place in Basel every year creates a profit for the foundation. In 1993 the festival is visualised by Umbul Umbul Flags, twelve of which had been painted by local artists.

No Nuke Festival, Tokyo 1991: Performances of international artists for a world without nuclear power.

Yoohkiit, 50 years of Unicef 1996: For its anniversary, Unicef Switzerland invites 12 school classes from the country's four language regions to intercultural camps. The one-week camps are lead by artists from all continents. Yoohkiit, a word used by the Blackfoot Indians, means diversity. "Diversity and Mutuality" is the camp's theme. The young people dance with African musicians, talk to students in Brazil via the internet, paint Umbul Umbul Flags

the Air. Lucerne 1997: One hundred Umbul Umbul Flags painted by school children and art school students accompany the campaign for cleaner air.

School festival, Langnau i. E. 1996: The third and forth grade of the Rudolf Steiner school participate in the great street parade on the subject "Colour and Form", waving 25 Umbul Umbul Flags, they had painted themselves.

Theaterhaus Gessnerallee 1993: As part of the referendum campaign for the Theaterhaus Gessnerallee in Zurich, the Rainbow Project is invited to organise flag-painting events during the festival Theater Spektakel. Painting flags together creates a positive atmosphere for various personal encounters, enabling the theatre to get its message across to the theatre festival's visitors.

Border trail Napfbergland 1998: Along the border between Lucerne and Berne, two Swiss cantons, a long-distance hiking trail was created in 1998. Realised for the anniversary "150 years Swiss Confederation" with the motto "From war in the past to peaceful coexistence at present to co-operation and exchange in the future". Each of the 26 communities taking part in the project paints a Umbul Umbul Flag. For the opening ceremony of the border trail, the flags decorate the summit of Napf mountain, which is declared the centre of the world for the duration of this event.

North/South Market, Bundesplatz Berne 1998: On the Bundesplatz, a market and a big intercultural festival take place as a part of the international North/South Conference for Sustainable Development. Umbul Umbul Flags visualise the market's open spirit, framing the performances on stage.

Festival of Cultures 1991: Umbul Umbul Flags visualise the Festival of Cultures in Chur, as a part of the Swiss Confederation's 700-year-celebrations: "A solidarity festival on a large scale: more than 100,000 visitors, musical performances from all continents and typical meals from all over the world."

Snow Peace Performance, 1991: Performance during the Gulf war with the artists Madi Kertonegoro (Dance), Gérard Widmer (Fujara) and Willi Grimm (Didgeridoo). The Didjeridu is closely connected with the mythical symbol of the Australian Rainbow Snake, and it has always been played by the Aborigines for healing purposes, too.

200 years Gotthelf, Lützelfüh 1997: As part of the sculpture trail to mark Jeremias Gotthelf's 200th anniversary, a row of flags in front of the village church at Lützelflüh stands for Gotthelf's timeless spirit of confrontation and dialogue.
